UNESCO (The United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization) has proclaimed Carnaval de Barranquilla as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This honor - which follows the Colombian government recognition of the event in 2001 as a National Cultural Patrimony - identifies Carnaval de Barranquilla as one of the great cultural events in the world today.
